Written by Toshiaki Iwashiro, the supernatural battle suspense manga ‘PSYREN’—serialized in Shueisha’s ‘Weekly Shonen Jump’ from 2008 to 2010—has been officially greenlit for a television anime adaptation.
Despite concluding nearly 15 years ago, the series retains a deeply devoted fanbase, evidenced by its nomination three separate times in AnimeJapan’s “Manga We Want to See Animated” ranking. This project finally fulfills the long-held hopes of its fans.

The story follows Ageha Yoshina, a first-year high school student who one day discovers a mysterious red telephone card left in a payphone booth. Several days later, his childhood friend and classmate, Sakurako Amamiya—who possessed a similar card—vanishes. In his search for Sakurako, Ageha accesses the “Secret Society Psyren,” a group rumored to be the mastermind behind a nationwide string of mysterious disappearances. Thus begins a life-or-death game.
In conjunction with the announcement, the production team unveiled the teaser visual, the first promotional video, the main staff, and the primary cast. A celebratory illustration and comment from original author Toshiaki Iwashiro were also released.
The teaser visual depicts a somber scene: Ageha holding the red telephone card and the sword-wielding heroine, Sakurako, stand amidst a desolate world dominated by an ominous tower. The illustration also features a payphone—a symbolic item of the series—creating an atmosphere of intense gravity.
Composed of live-action footage, the promotional video features a payphone booth glowing ominously in the night. By overlaying production sketches onto cityscapes, the video evokes the series’ premise of the real world intersecting with another dimension.

Katsumi Ono (Symphogear series) will serve as director. The series composition is by Shin Yoshida, with character designs by Shiro Okuma. Music will be composed by Takashi Ohmama, Tatsuhiko Saiki, and Shu Kanematsu. Satelight, known for the Aquarion and Macross series, will handle animation production.
In the voice cast, Rikuya Yasuda will play the protagonist, Ageha Yoshina, while Mayuko Kazama will voice Sakurako Amamiya. Reflecting on his casting, Yasuda recalled, “When I received the notification of my audition success at home, I let out such a loud voice I was grateful to be in an environment where I could shout.” He expressed his enthusiasm, adding, “I want to share the excitement I’ve felt for the TV anime PSYREN from that moment until today with everyone immediately. I will run full speed ahead with Ageha through the world of PSYREN, which is heating up again after fifteen years.”
Kazama shared her interpretation of her character: “Sakurako is nicknamed the ‘Ice Queen’ for her cool demeanor, but she is actually a character who hides a whirlwind of emotions inside.” She built anticipation for the show, stating, “During recording, I gave my all to portraying her, constantly considering how to face her inner self and express her charm. Please look forward to the broadcast!”
Original author Toshiaki Iwashiro expressed his joy: “It’s getting an anime adaptation! I am so happy to finally give this report to my parents and family, a report I couldn’t make 15 years ago.” He expressed gratitude for the time that has passed: “Young editors and anime production staff greeted me with burning passion, telling me they loved reading PSYREN in their teens. I am overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude that those very people have grown up and are now involved in making this anime. I hope the fun of PSYREN reaches everyone! I also participated in various aspects of the script, and I am very much looking forward to seeing Ageha and the others moving and talking.”
Furthermore, to commemorate the anime adaptation, reprints of all volumes of the original manga have been confirmed. Various digital bookstores are also offering the first seven chapters for free for a limited time.
