It has been decided that RuriDragon, the manga by Masaoki Shindo currently serialized bi-weekly in the digital edition of Weekly Shonen Jump, will be adapted into a television anime. The production will be handled by Kyoto Animation, marking the studio’s first-ever adaptation of a Jump title. The announcement has sparked surprise across the internet.

The story depicts the laid-back daily life of Ruri Aoki, a high school girl who wakes up one morning to find she has suddenly grown horns. The series has garnered significant accolades, including first place in the “Nationwide Bookstore Employees’ Recommended Comics of 2023” and second place in the Web Manga Category of the “Next Manga Awards 2024.”

The newly released promotional video features Ruri turning around in surprise after being tapped on the shoulder, recreating the pose from the cover of the first volume. The video also depicts Ruri in familiar poses from the original manga, offering fans their first glimpse of the character as animated by Kyoto Animation. Regarding the broadcast schedule, it was announced as being “quite a ways off,” with further updates to follow.

Animation production is being handled by Kyoto Animation, a studio renowned for releasing numerous masterpieces. As this marks KyoAni’s first venture into Jump properties, the internet reacted with astonishment. Comments included, “Is this the ultimate tag team!?” “It is emotional seeing KyoAni create a Jump work, yet RuriDragon makes perfect sense,” “I never expected KyoAni to handle a Jump title!” and “I was shocked at the combination of KyoAni and Jump, but considering they did Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid, it actually feels completely natural.” On X (formerly Twitter), “RuriDragon” trended at number one.
RuriDragon Comment from Original Author Masaoki Shindo
“Thank you for reading RuriDragon again this year. Hyouka is my favorite Kyoto Animation work, particularly the Cultural Festival arc. The sequence where Hotaro minds the shop is my absolute favorite part to watch—even though he’s just sitting there!! And now, that very same Kyoto Animation is producing this manga—making it into an anime.”
