Hakusensha announced on the 3rd that the English edition of the hit manga Berserk (Original Creator: Kentaro Miura, Art: Studio Gaga, Supervisor: Kouji Mori) has surpassed 10 million copies sold. To celebrate this milestone, the North American publisher Dark Horse Comics released a commemorative short video on social media.
Berserk is an epic dark fantasy set in a world of swords, magic, and monsters. It follows the protagonist, Guts, as he grows and battles grotesque creatures. The series began serialization in Monthly Animal House in 1989 before transferring to Young Animal. It was adapted into a television anime from 1997 to 1998, a cinematic anime trilogy from 2012 to 2013, and another television anime series from 2016 to 2017.
The manga series has reached a cumulative global circulation of 70 million copies and has been translated in 20 countries and regions worldwide. The series’ creator, Kentaro Miura, passed away from acute aortic dissection in May 2021 at the age of 54. Following his death, the manga went on hiatus after publishing its latest chapter in September 2021, and the 41st compiled volume was released in December of that year.
Serialization resumed with Chapter 365 in June 2022 under the supervision of Miura’s close friend and fellow manga artist, Kouji Mori. The artwork is now handled by Studio Gaga, a production studio consisting of assistants who trained directly under Miura. The series currently spans 43 volumes.
The English edition of Berserk is available in a standard B6 size, matching the Japanese release, as well as a deluxe B5 omnibus edition that collects three standard volumes into a single hardcover. The deluxe edition currently spans 14 volumes. Notably, the first volume of this deluxe edition claimed the number one spot in the 2024 U.S. manga sales rankings.
