Dark Gathering is a new anime series that follows the adventures of Keitaro, a boy who can sense spirits, and Yayoi, a girl who can see them. Together, they hunt down ghosts to find the one that took Yayoi’s mother away. Along the way, they encounter various supernatural phenomena and dangers, as well as their friend Eiko, who has a curse similar to Keitaro’s.
The anime is based on a manga series by Kenichi Kondo, which has been serialized in Jump Square magazine since 2019. The anime adaptation is produced by OLM and directed by Hiroshi Ikehata, with scripts by Shigeru Murakoshi and music by Kohta Yamamoto, Shun Narita, and Yusuke Seo.
The anime premiered on July 10, 2023, and has been well-received by fans and critics alike for its blend of horror, comedy, and mystery. Sentai Filmworks has also licensed the anime for streaming outside of Asia.

Dark Gathering Episode 4 Spoilers
The title of the fourth episode of Dark Gathering is “The Ghost of the Lake”. The episode will follow Keitaro and Yayoi investigating a rumor about a ghost that haunts a lake near their school. They discover that the ghost is a girl who drowned in the lake years ago and is now trapped in a loop of reliving her death.
Keitaro and Yayoi decide to help her move on by discovering the truth behind her death and her killer’s identity. However, they soon realize they are not only interested in the lake’s ghost. A mysterious man named Kuroda appears and claims to be a ghost hunter who wants to capture the ghost for his own purposes.
He reveals that he knows about Yayoi’s ability and quest to find her mother’s spirit. He also warns them that there are other dangerous ghosts out there that are after Yayoi’s power.

Who Are the Main Characters of Dark Gathering?
The main characters of Dark Gathering are:
- Keitaro Gentouga: The protagonist of the series. He is a college freshman with a cursed right hand that attracts ghosts. He hates and fears ghosts but also feels a strange fascination with them. He has feelings for Eiko but also develops a friendship with Yayoi. Nobunaga Shimazaki voices him.
- Yayoi Houzuki: The deuteragonist of the series. She is a child prodigy with two pupils in each eye, allowing her to see ghosts clearly. She loves ghosts and wants to find the one that took her mother away. She is very smart and resourceful, but also naive and reckless. She hires Keitaro as her tutor and drags him and her to haunted places. She is voiced by Yu Sasahara.
- Eiko Houzuki: A supporting character and Keitaro’s childhood friend. She has a cursed left hand that grows nerve endings from it. She is in love with Keitaro and is very overprotective of him. She stalks him with hidden cameras and GPS devices and tries to keep him away from Yayoi and ghosts. She is good at computer science and folklore and helps Keitaro with his studies. Kana Hanazawa voices her.
What is the Storyline of the Dark Gathering Series?
Keitaro Gentago despises spirits with all his heart but is also a spirit medium. He has a history of being possessed by evil spirits, and the combination of the threat and the trauma of that experience has left him feeling antisocial and hostile toward men.
After he graduates, Keitaro decides to integrate back into society and enrolls as a tutor. One of Keitaro’s closest childhood pals, Eiko, has been there for him through thick and thin throughout his formative years.
Yayoi Hozuki, by some twist of fate, is Keitaro’s first student. Yayoi is Eiko’s cousin, and he discovers, seemingly by chance, that she has a sinister ghostly aura surrounding her. Yayaoi insists to her instructor that she must go to a spooky location.
Keitaro, realizing his plight, shies away from the eerie location. But Yayaoi doesn’t like that and complains about him to the organization for tutors, threatening his employment if he doesn’t go along with her request to visit the haunted area.
Yayaoi, in contrast to Keitaro, is drawn to the ghost because she wants answers regarding the ghost that she believes took her mother. The visit to the haunted location gives Yayaoi a great chance but distracts Keitaro from his mission and gets him into another predicament.
