Anime Sequel to “The Great Pretender” Will Come Out in 2024

Great Pretender Razbliuto, the successor to the popular TV anime series, will launch in 2024, according to the series’ official website.

In addition, a brand-new key image and announcement video for the anime sequel were shown. Dorothy, a new character introduced in the picture, is shown as an expert con artist.

Officially licensed by Manga Productions for 16 Middle Eastern nations, the animation will be streamed by Crunchyroll in over 200 countries outside of China.

The Great Pretender Razbliuto has brought back much of the original cast and crew to reprise their roles from the first season. The series’ screenplay is being written by Taku Kishimoto (Ranking of Kings) and Hiro Kaburagi (Great Pretender, Season 1). Script supervisor credit has been given to Ryouta Kosawa, who wrote the first season of The Great Pretender.

Assistant director Mai Teshima (who directed episodes 13 and 20 of the first season of Great Pretender) has been replaced by Shousuke Ishibashi and Hirotaka Katou, while Yumiko Sudou (who worked on the picture board with Hirotaka Katou) and Yuusuke Takeda have been promoted from the ranks of chief animator and art director, respectively. Composer Yutaka Yamada is also back for a second season. Once again, the animation was created by WIT Studio.

More facts about Great Pretender Razbliuto will be announced on November 18, 2023, at Anime NYC, during a panel with anime director Kaburagi, WIT Studio president George Wada, and Production I.G producer Hitoshi Ito. The anime will also have a sneak preview showing.

In July 2020, Fuji TV’s +UItra block aired the world premiere of the Great Pretender anime. Over the course of its two seasons, the show aired 23 episodes. Netflix began airing the anime exclusively globally, outside of Japan, in August 2020.

A manga version of the show lasted just ten episodes, from June 10, 2020, until August 20, 2020. Before being on indefinite hiatus, it was serialized in Mag Garden’s Mag Comi and LINE manga platforms.

The official website for the anime gives this summary:

Masato Edamura is supposedly Japan’s greatest swindler. Together with his partner Kudo, they try to trick a Frenchman in Asakusa but unexpectedly get tricked instead. The Frenchman, whom they tried to swindle, turns out to be Laurent Thierry — a much higher-level ‘confidence man,’ in control of the mafias. Edamura is yet to find out what fate awaits him, after having engaged in the Frenchman’s dirty jobs…!
