The release date for *Made in Abyss: Awakening Mystery*, the first part of the new *Made in Abyss* theatrical series, has been set for October 23, alongside the unveiling of a new key visual.
The illustration features Riko, Reg, Nanachi, and Faputa—and even includes a surprise appearance by Cravali!
The Abyss, humanity’s last unexplored frontier, is a massive chasm harboring bizarre creatures and relics beyond human comprehension. Driven by a spirit of adventure, those who brave its depths have come to be known as Cave Raiders. Riko, an orphan living in the town of Orth at the edge of the Abyss, dreams of becoming a great Cave Raider like her mother, Lyza. The discovery of her mother’s White Whistle spurs Riko to embark on a journey into the deep.
Accompanied by the amnesiac robot Reg and the Hollow Nanachi, Riko confronts Bondrewd in the fifth layer. There, Prushka, a young girl raised by Bondrewd, is subjected to a gruesome experiment and transformed into a Life Reverberating Stone (Your Worth), ultimately becoming an enduring source of support for Riko on her perilous journey.
The trio then descends to the sixth layer, the Capital of the Unreturned, where they arrive at a village of Hollows governed by an absolute system of “value.” Faputa, the Princess of the Hollows, harbors a singular desire: to destroy the village in order to free her mother, Irumyuui, from her endless suffering. The fulfillment of this wish triggers the village’s tragic collapse. Bearing the weight of these sacrifices and intertwined wishes, Riko and her companions press onward, setting their sights on the seventh layer.
The original work is by Akihito Tsukushi. The film is directed by Masayuki Kojima, with a script by Hideyuki Kurata. Character designs are provided by Yuka Kuroda and Kazuchika Kise (Production I.G). Yō Yamada serves as the sound director, Kevin Penkin composes the music, and Kinema Citrus handles the animation production.
The voice cast features Miyu Tomita as Riko, Mariya Ise as Reg, Shiori Izawa as Nanachi, and Misaki Kuno as Faputa.
