Author and comic book artist Bryan Lee O’Malley wanted to bring something new to the print environment, which was dominated by superheroes and zombies (and often a combination of the two).
The result was the graphic novel series “Scott Pilgrim,” whose protagonist, a Canadian bassist named Scott Pilgrim, is obsessed with wooing a girl named Ramona Flowers. Scott Pilgrim, which was published in six volumes, was an instant success with readers because of its vibrant colors, witty dialogue, and unabashed acceptance of its distinctive visual style.
It’s hardly surprising that a live-action film version of “Scott Pilgrim” was made due to the book’s enormous success and visually arresting style. Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead starred as Scott and Ramona, respectively, in Edgar Wright’s 2010 film “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” which also included an impressive ensemble cast.
Although movie didn’t do particularly well at the box office, “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” has subsequently become a cult classic, demonstrating continued interest in Scott Pilgrim-related material. It’s unclear where Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim will go, but it probably won’t be a reboot. “That [the series] doesn’t just expand the universe, but also…well, just watch it.”
Not everything from the novels made it into the film adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Scott Pilgrim Takes Off will likely take cues from the novels and games, adopting additional storylines from O’Malley’s source material.

Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is a highly anticipated autumn 2023 TV program, and it premieres on Netflix this Friday, November 17.
Although it has not yet been announced how many episodes will be included in the anime series, it appears that all of them will be accessible to stream instantly.
