The authentic battle and high fantasy series The Witch and the Mercenary (known in Japanese as Majo to Youhei) is officially getting a TV anime adaptation. Based on the acclaimed light novel written by Chouhoukiteki Kaeru and illustrated by Kanayo Benchi, the series is scheduled to broadcast on the Nippon TV network in 2027. Fans of gripping fantasy narratives and intense combat have a lot to look forward to with this upcoming release.

Produced by Studio 8bit—the powerhouse animation studio behind major hits like That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime—the anime promises to deliver top-tier action sequences and stunning magical displays. The original light novel and its subsequent manga adaptation by Masato Miyagi have already garnered a dedicated fanbase, making this one of the most highly anticipated fantasy anime announcements to drop recently.
The Plot: A Deadly Encounter Turned Escort Mission
The Witch and the Mercenary is set on a desolate continent where magic and magical beasts have long been lost to history. In this unforgiving land, the only remaining symbols of mysterious terror capable of wielding true magic are the Witches. Feared and despised by the masses, these anomalous beings are hunted without mercy.
Enter Jig Crane, a solitary and highly skilled mercenary who joins a subjugation squad to eliminate these targets. Deep within a dense forest, his path crosses with Shiasha, the widely feared “Silent Witch.” Their fierce, life-or-death battle seemingly ends with the mercenary’s victory. However, just as the dust settles, the witch makes an unexpected request: “I want to hire you as my bodyguard. Please take me to a place where no one will hunt me.” This fateful encounter marks the beginning of a journey of no return for two vastly different souls seeking a place to belong.
Cast and Characters Revealed
The production committee has unveiled the lead voice cast, bringing in some heavy hitters to voice the iconic duo. This highly anticipated series will join the ranks of other major releases slated for 2027.
Jig Crane (Voiced by Taito Ban): A highly skilled mercenary with immense combat prowess and a remarkably tough physique. He is a rare master of the twin-bladed sword and possesses absolutely no magic. While he won’t hesitate to kill if the job demands it, he strongly dislikes unnecessary bloodshed.

Shiasha (Voiced by Saori Hayami): Known and feared worldwide as the “Silent Witch.” She is a beautiful woman who excels in earth magic. Being completely out of touch with human norms makes her naive to the outside world, but her naturally inquisitive nature means she loves acquiring new knowledge.

Production Staff and Additional Announcements
To celebrate the anime adaptation, original character designer Kanayo Benchi and manga artist Masato Miyagi have both released special congratulatory illustrations. Additionally, a brand-new original voice drama titled “Expectation and Anxiety,” written specifically by the original author Chouhoukiteki Kaeru, has been published online to give fans an early taste of the character dynamics.
The anime will be directed by Shimpei Ezaki, with Daishiro Tanimura handling the series composition. Keita Matsumoto is in charge of character design, while Akiko Fujita serves as the sound director. The musical score, which will undoubtedly set the tone for this dark fantasy epic, is composed by Rei Ishizuka.
